Do you know what EL Wire (Electroluminescent Wire) is? If so, have you ever used it in a project? If you answered no to any of these questions, you need to check out this class at i3 Detroit.
Matt Switlik will be teaching a class on how to use EL Wire in projects as well as walking everyone through a hands on demo of your very own light up hat.
The class will be taught on Friday December 10th, 2010 at 7pm. There will be a material fee of $35 dollars for the hat kit which includes everything you need to make the hat. If you would like to bring your own object to add EL Wire to the power supply will be $10 and the wire will be available in white (pictured on the left) and pink for $2 per foot.

i3 Detroit is again lucky to be involved with the Detroit Urban Craft Fair for their 5th anniversary. The event is this weekend at the Filmore in Downtown Detroit starting at 10a on Saturday (12/4) and 11a on Sunday (12/5).
Besides the many vendors selling unique and cool crafts, you will find i3 Detroit doing 2 Make N’ Takes for the fair.
Matt is doing a soft electronics project. He is taking cowboy hats and outlining them in EL wire for that necessary accessory for your holiday party. This is a hands on build and we will help you every step of the way.
Amy is doing a Scrabble tile jewelry project. She will be taking everyday Scrabble tiles and crafting them in to unique jewelry for gifts or yourself. This is a hands on build as well where she will guide you through the process.
Both projects have small fee but you get to take home your homemade craft.
i3 Detroit is also working on a top secret project that will be unveiled at the show. Come check it out. I promise, it will be worth it.
All Hands Active (our hackerspace friends to the West) will also be there with a cool soldering Make N’ Take.

Save the date! On January 15th, i3 Detroit will be hosting the second annual i3 WinterLAN Social event, starting Saturday at noon and ending when the sun comes up on Sunday.
The event will be all about games – BYOC (Bring your own computer) gaming, Board gaming, and tabletop RPG.
The i3Detroit common space will be set up for computer gaming with plenty of power, tables, and chairs. The loft will sport a projector hooked up for console gaming (Got a vintage console you can bring?). Board games will take place in any of our multiple rooms.
If you have any kind of game people will enjoy, bring it, bring yourself, and bring your thirst for gaming. See you then!
Whether you’ve produced entire features yourself, or have just watched from the sidelines, this event is for you. Like the first one, this is open to anyone, regardless of whether you’re an i3Detroit member or not. This is your chance to show off your work, recruit help for your next project, or just meet your peers. Also, we will again feature a talent exchange board, where folks who have skills can hook up with folks who need them!
If you have samples to show (under 10 minutes?), please bring a DVD or something with a VGA output for the projector. Snacks will be provided. Let’s aim for 7:00pm. Note: There’s also a papercraft party happening in the craft room at the same time, so if you find them first, don’t assume you’re in the wrong place!
Join Nick, at 4p on 11/7, as he walks the class through the very basics of how to operate each of these machines. He will cover safety, tooling, measurement, set-up & operation of the mill, lathe & precision drill press.
Nick is a self-trained machinist so he won’t have all the answers. But you will get a good overview on how to safely use the equipment for simple projects. You will also be equipped with the fundamentals to seek out further training on your own.
The class will be $5 to go toward the tooling repair fund. Please register on eventbrite.
This is a demonstation class but feel free to bring some aluminum stock to practice with after the class.
