Bob Ross: Happy Little Painters
We just had an awesome time running a paint-along class with everyone’s favorite late 80′s-early 90′s eccentric oil painter, Bob Ross. Yelp was kind enough to sponsor us with free snacks and drinks for this event! i3 member, Kevin, (while donning a bob ross wig) guided the students through the intricacies of wet-on-wet oil painting.
The students spent two and a half hours following along creating a majestic mountain landscape while learning innovative ways of working with oil on canvas. While the paint will take about two weeks to dry, the painters were able to take their paintings home that day carefully transported with plastic wrap. The painters can now demonstrate their newly-learned skills in wielding a fan brush, and palette knife.
There was a huge demand for the event, so we will definitely be running more of these in the coming weeks. Stay tuned, and like us on facebook for future updates!
i3 Motorsports Gets Some New Swag From Signazon.com
Signazon.com is our new favorite banner, sticker, and all things signs supplier. Check out what they made for us! Signazon lets customers design their own sign through their online design tool. Just upload a picture of how you want your sign to look, select a size and other options, and you’re good to go. Signazon has donated two 2′x4′ banners to us and a stack of really cool vinyl stickers. Look for these anywhere you might see our legendary #3 power wheels racer, or other i3 Detroit made vehicles.
Red Bull Creation Challenge 2012 is Here!
Redbull is one of the few companies that really do an excellent job engaging the maker/hacker community. Their 72-hour build-a-thon challenges always generate really creative results. This year’s should be no different. Your favorite hackerspace (hint: that’s us!) is a finalist again this year. However, things will be a bit different this year and hopefully for the better. This time, RedBull is coming to the finalists and will be livestreaming the event online. You’ll be able to watch us build, hack, create, laugh, smile and hopefully win.
The nation-wide synchronized creation challenge starts Thursday, the 19th at 9PM EST, and goes for 72 hours straight through the weekend. Point your browser to http://creation.redbullusa.com/ creation to watch the chaos ensue at i3 Detroit and the 11 other hackerspaces, shops, and homes around the US. Press release follows:
Vinyl Record Album Melting & Open Shop Day

Join us for a lazy Sunday afternoon of vinyl melting. The idea is simple: Take an old record album, add heat, and reshape the now goey black disk into something awesome!
Make cool wall art, a dish for chex mix, or a decoration for your art car. Whatever you want! We don’t care as long as you take home something you proudly forged in the fires of your own creativity! Bring some random metal stuff you might want to form your records around, otherwise we will have various objects to seve this purpose on hand!
We will also have some Popsicles served up to keep cool in the summer heat! ¡Qué refrescante! (how refreshing!)
Admission includes two vinyl records for melting. Feel free to bring some from home, or buy more from us for $1/record if we have extras!
This event goes for 3 hours, but feel free to come and go anytime within that 3 hours. The actual act of melting should only take around 5-15 minutes per record.
